Most of the earlier levels sort of have this central area and a bunch of other areas to go off to, but the last two become these really long, linear levels (with some optional stuff on the way). I did not enjoy the last few levels as much as I did all the ones before. So, two questions, what's generally regarded as the best Ape Escape game, and what other (non-new gen) games out there can I play that would scratch this itch (once I'm done with this one)?įinally finished the game.

It's a huge shame that the series is all but dead now, though I've heard talk that Astrobot is a good successor to this series (haven't played either Astrobot game yet).

What I don't understand is why the heck it's just the second game that's on the PS4 and not the third one (which got a PS4 ESRB listing years ago).

I'm ashamed it's taken me this long to get to this series and am glad that PlayStation's at least ported this one over to the PS4 so that there's a legal way to play one of them.

I cannot stop smiling while playing the game and I keep taking screenshots/videos of the dumb things I run into. I'm only ⅔ through the game, but I can already tell that this game's going to end up being one of my GOTYs. It's a bit annoying that you can only hold up to four gadgets at a time (without going into the gadget menu), but it's not a huge hassle. The face buttons are used to quick-select a gadget, which helps in using them in quick succession. Freeing up the right stick for actual gameplay allows for some really unique gameplay mechanics that you otherwise wouldn't be able to do, like moving both the main character and the RC car at the same time. This scared me off playing the first game years ago, but half an hour into this one, I'm completely used to the controls.

The right analogue stick is not used for the camera, but for the different gadgets (in different ways). These are iconic and it's a shame PlayStation has stopped using them as mascots for the brand.Ī huge part of the series that I've only remembered to mention now, are the controls. The characters in the game all look unique and have memorable design, but damn, the standouts are obviously the monkeys. The PS4 upres and widescreen support really help make it one of the best looking PS2-on-PS4 games. You (Hikaru) are tasked with recapturing the monkeys before it's too late! As you might discern, the game very much does not take itself seriously, and you can see this in both the ridiculous story or within the world itself.ĭespite being twenty years old, the visuals still look good thanks to that cartoony art style and those bright colours. The premise of the game (as told through cutscenes with horrible voice acting), is that you accidentally send monkey helmets instead of monkey pants to Monkey Parks and chaos ensues as the monkeys are now sentient again and taking over the world.

The game has that PS2 charm and it has it in spades. The first thing you see upon loading the game is this loud-ass intro that pretty much sets the tone for how ridiculous and dumb the rest of the game is. After having gone through most of the PS2-on-PS4 games I was interested in, and seeing what PlayStation's focusing on these days, I decided to stop waiting and finally see what all this monkey madness was about. I'd been holding off playing AE2 on the PS4 in hopes of a remake or remaster trilogy from PlayStation. Let me get this out of the way, Ape Escape 2 is a crazy fun game that still holds up over two decades later. I've liked (or loved) all of them to varying degrees, some partly due to nostalgia for the generation, and some because they are genuinely great games that still hold up. I've gone through the likes of Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts, The Mark of Kri and more. Over the past year I've been going over a bunch of PS2 classics that I missed and posting about them here. I usually wait until I'm done with a game to post a thread about it but this game is too damn fun.
